Asus ROG FX503VM: Complete Guide and A Review

Asus’ newly-released Asus ROG FX503VM gaming laptop is unlikely to carry the Republic of Gamers branding that ASUS usually applies to its gaming products. As far as the gaming industry is concerned, they are not the first vendor to attempt to develop a new branch of their business.

For some time now, Dell has been expanding its Alienware line of gaming notebooks with the Inspiron series. In spite of that, it does pose questions and place ASUS in a strange position where it feels almost like it is in direct competition with itself.

Although the FX503 comes equipped with a dual-core Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia GTX 10-Series graphics card, and a 120 Hz display, it is well suited to meet the demands of users. There can be no doubt about the credentials of this hardware. There is no doubt that this device is a lean, mean, neon-lit, glowing metal sci-fi death machine.

How I Purchased It And From Where?

About a year and a half later, I was looking for a gaming laptop that was affordable. There is no doubt that Amazon is one of the biggest e-commerce sites in the world, where people can purchase various products for their needs. As well, I made a trip to Amazon, and after reading the reviews, I purchased the ASUS ROG FX503.

Therefore, it is still functioning well after being used for one and a half years. The purpose of this article is to provide you with all the information you need about this laptop.

Pricing

It is available in two variants, the Asus ROG FX503VM and the FX503. Starting at Rs. 69,990, the entry-level variant is equipped with an Intel Core i5 processor and does not have a SSD storage option. Last but not least, this variant comes with only 2GB of graphics memory. However, the higher-end model costs approximately Rs. 87,990 and features a faster Intel Core i7 processor, 128GB of SSD, and better 4GB graphics memory.

Display

Furthermore, the 15.6-inch full-HD screen has a 120 frame-per-second refresh rate, making it an excellent choice for gamers. It is true that the FX503 is not the first laptop to offer such a display, but I am very grateful that it is available.

Even so, when putting aside the refresh rate, it makes the FX503 seem frustratingly ordinary, especially when gaming laptops are jumping on the 4K display and HDR bandwagon, and its absence here is significant.

Design

Although it does not fall under the ROG brand, it does resemble one, at least in terms of its aesthetics and design palette. Even though the Asus ROG FX503VM is not the most expensive laptop on the market, it has some attractive texturing both on the interior and exterior. On the other hand, at first glance, you are unlikely to notice a significant difference between this product and a product such as the ROG Strix.

Because of the components required to process graphics, the laptop is naturally bulky (in addition to the fans). Furthermore, it is equipped with an optical disc drive, which contributes to its bulk. No doubt, the FX503 is a large, bulky device that is barely able to fit into a backpack (normal size) and is (of course) very heavy. Especially if you are required to carry the laptop wherever you go, it is not a very comfortable laptop to use.

Keyboard

The keyboard of the FX503VM is one of its strongest points. A similarity exists once again between the device and the GL503 line. It has a good travel of 1.8 mm and the key presses are responsive. There is a little bit of spongy feedback, but not enough so to ruin the overall typing experience.

Only the space bar emits a small squeak from time to time, usually when it is hit off-center. The keycaps are quiet and there is virtually no clatter from the keys, with the exception of the space bar.

When compared with MSI laptops, which are known for their excellent keyboards, the FX503VM falls short. This Asus device cannot compete with the firm feedback of the keyboards on the GS63VR and GF62VR, which make typing a pleasure.

Red keyboard backlights on the FX503VM are reminiscent of those on older ROG laptops (prior to the “RGB revolution”). It is possible to adjust the brightness at three different levels by pressing the Fn key and selecting either the up or down arrow.

The keyboard has a number of special keys, including controls for volume and screen brightness, but there are no dedicated macro keys. A previous complaint we had with Asus FX laptops is resolved by intentionally offsetting the power button.

Sound And Webcam

Front-facing speakers provide clear sound and provide an immersive experience when playing games or watching videos. In addition to being powered by ICEPower technology, the speakers provide a superior sound quality.

Additionally, you gain access to an array of front-facing microphones that ensures a crisp and clear recording of your voice. In terms of quality, the webcam is adequate, and using it for Skype calls will not present any problems.

Ports

The Asus ROG FX503VM is equipped with a decent number of ports. On the left side of the laptop, there is an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, a mini DisplayPort port, two USB 3.0 ports, an audio port, and a charging port.

On the right side of the device, you will find one more USB 3.0 port as well as an SD card reader. Two vents are located on the back of the device for the purpose of dissipating heat.

Touchpad

A typical notebook touchpad measures 103 mm by 73 mm. Even though the pad’s surface is smooth and easy to glide, the clicking mechanism (located at the bottom half of the pad) is a bit spongy.

Despite its hollowness and cheap feel, the pad is easily bendable under further pressure. A tracking system can be implemented over the button markings. Moreover, because the matte finish is a magnet for oils and dust, it will need to be cleaned regularly.

Performance

It is equipped with an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 (7th generation) processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, which can be expanded to a maximum of 32GB, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card with either 2GB or 4GB of RAM, as well as a 128GB SSD and 1TB of SATA storage, which ensures no performance issues.

With ASUS FX503, you can easily handle serious multitasking, heavy browsing, and long gaming sessions. There is no limit to how fast and efficiently the laptop can perform no matter what you ask of it.

Because it is a gaming laptop, we tested NFS Payback, Far Cry 5, and PUBG and the performance was excellent. It was a pleasure to play the games as they loaded quickly and provided impressive frame rates. Although we noticed some frame drops in Far Cry 5 at High settings, lowering some settings resolved the problem completely.

Windows 10 Home is preinstalled on the laptop, making it an easy-to-use machine. A four-cell 64Wh battery supports all of these features.

Conclusion

The Asus ROG FX503VM is a gaming laptop that is powered by an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. It features a 15.6-inch full HD display and 16GB of RAM. The laptop has a sleek and stylish design, and it is suitable for gaming, as well as other demanding tasks such as video editing and 3D modeling.

The keyboard is comfortable to type on and the touchpad is responsive. The battery life is decent and the cooling system does a good job of keeping the system from overheating during prolonged gaming sessions. Overall, the Asus ROG FX503VM is a solid choice for gamers who are looking for a high-performance laptop at a reasonable price.
